Can you tell me about your story and what inspired you to open an art gallery?

My journey to opening Raud Fine Art Gallery is deeply rooted in a quest for growth and fulfillment. Originally from Estonia, I grew up in a remote area with big dreams of experiencing life in a vibrant city beyond my homeland’s borders. I ventured into politics, even running for the European Parliament, and enjoyed a career as a celebrated actress and public figure. However, I felt constrained by the limited scope of opportunities in Estonia.

At 26, I made a bold decision to relocate to the United States, leaving behind a comfortable life to pursue a new beginning. It was here that I discovered a profound passion for photography, earning a BA in Photography (magna cum laude) from Columbia College Chicago. While establishing myself in Pilsen, renowned for its thriving art scene, I acquired a studio space that would eventually evolve into Raud Fine Art Gallery.
Stepping into this space, I immediately recognized its potential as more than just a home for photography equipment. My entrepreneurial spirit was matched by a desire to make a meaningful impact, reminiscent of my advocacy in politics. Shortly after opening, I hosted my first exhibition, which surpassed expectations—selling 40% of the artwork and attracting over 200 attendees. For the artist Delia Rose West and I it was a first time for both. And that’s what gives me so much joy – being the first one to give artists the opportunity to take their art to the next level – I recognized the need for that kind of empowerment and started right away.

What motivated you to open your gallery?

The decision to open my gallery came at a pivotal moment in my career. After completing my degree and achieving success as a photographer—working with Grammy-nominated bands and them showcasing my work on album covers, and in various publications—I realized that while freelancing was fulfilling, I sought something more substantial, more meaningful. Graduating from art school had instilled in me a deep sense of confidence and a passion for fine art.

One of the most impactful courses I took was Visual Culture, where we critically analyzed contemporary and classical art. It profoundly resonated with me, inspiring a desire to immerse myself further in the art world post-graduation. I didn’t wait for the perfect moment, as I believe it’s more about seizing opportunities when they feel right—though sometimes this can be both a blessing and a challenge.

What are the mission and vision of your gallery?

At Raud Fine Art Gallery, we are passionate about bridging cultural gaps and fostering international dialogue through art. We actively seek to collaborate with artists from around the world, believing that their unique perspectives enrich the American art community. The juxtaposition of classical art forms within contemporary spaces is particularly compelling to us, as it creates a dynamic and thought-provoking experience for our audience, and it’s highly valued among the audience.

Our vision for Raud Fine Art Gallery is to serve as a beacon of cultural exchange and artistic innovation. By showcasing diverse artworks and facilitating cross-cultural interactions, we aim to challenge traditional artistic norms and inspire new ways of thinking. Through curated exhibitions, collaborative projects, and community engagement initiatives, we strive to elevate the voices of artists whose contributions may not always be recognized in mainstream art circles.

Ultimately, RFA Gallery aspires to contribute meaningfully to the cultural landscape of America by promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of global artistic traditions. We believe in the power of art to transcend boundaries, ignite conversations, and foster mutual respect and understanding among people of different backgrounds and perspectives. Providing artists from abroad with the opportunity to showcase their work in Chicago, one of the most vibrant and coveted art scenes in the country, represents a significant stepping stone for international artists seeking broader recognition and influence in the American art community. By facilitating these cultural exchanges, RFA Gallery aims to create a platform where artists from around the world can share their stories, challenge perceptions, and inspire new artistic movements that resonate globally.

How do you select the artists and artworks for your gallery?

Our process for selecting artists and artworks at RFA Gallery is rooted in personal connections, artistic discovery, and a commitment to showcasing diverse talents from around the world. Initially, I began by engaging with individuals outside of the art world who shared common interests with me. This approach led me to discover incredible artists whose work resonated deeply with me, often from those who pursued art as a passion rather than a profession. Recognizing their potential for broader recognition, I’ve had the privilege of introducing their work to a wider audience, cultivating both personal and professional relationships in the process.

Over time, my network in Chicago and globally has expanded significantly, bringing forth artists whose talents and perspectives enrich our gallery’s offerings. I actively seek out new talents through social media platforms and conduct studio visits to ensure a good fit for both artistic integrity and commercial viability. This evolving selection process allows us to curate exhibitions that not only reflect artistic excellence but also resonate with our audience’s diverse interests and preferences.

Collaborating with international institutions and galleries, such as Edciclopedia d’arte Italiana in Milan and galleries in Estonia, further broadens our scope and introduces our audience to a global perspective on contemporary art. These partnerships facilitate cultural exchanges and provide international artists with a platform to showcase their work in the vibrant art scene of Chicago.

What qualities do you look for in artists and their works when deciding who to exhibit?

When curating exhibitions at RFA Gallery, I prioritize artists who are eager to advance their craft and collaborate effectively. It’s like fishing – I throw the bite and now it’s up to the artist to either bite it and bite it hard, or not at all. Strong communication skills and a genuine passion for their work are crucial qualities I look for. I believe successful collaborations are rewarding for everyone involved and contribute to a vibrant gallery experience.

In terms of artwork selection, I seek pieces that exhibit technical excellence and resonate emotionally. Whether it’s precise abstraction or classical strength, I value art that sparks a strong response and connects deeply with viewers. Unique perspectives and the ability to engage our audience are crucial in shaping our diverse and compelling exhibitions at RFA Gallery. I trust my intuition.

Can you tell us about some of the artists you work with and their works?

Just to mention a few I have worked with:

Delia Rose West, originally from Southside Chicago, debuted her first show “Seeing Touch” at RFA Gallery, marking a significant milestone in both our careers. After reconnecting years later, I was impressed by her openness about pursuing art, which led to her creating a powerful body of work within three months. The exhibition explored the profound need for touch during the COVID-19 pandemic, blending her expertise in anatomy with skilled painting (oil on canvas)

Cedric Alexander Thurman, also from Southside Chicago, captivates with intuitive abstract paintings that play with monochrome hues and textures reminiscent of Lake Michigan’s movements. His artwork beautifully captures the essence of water in various forms. (Acrylic, oil, spraypaint on canvas and watercolor paper)

Camilo Carreno, a meticulous drawing artist from Bogota, Colombia, specializes in detailed figure drawings that meticulously portray human faces, bodies, and movements. His upcoming showcase at the gallery reflects his journey from social media recognition to the realm of fine art, highlighting his dedication to precision and storytelling through pencil sketches. What challenges have you faced in opening and managing your gallery?

One of the primary challenges I’ve faced in opening and managing my gallery is attracting the right audience. Developing and implementing effective strategies to draw in art collectors and investors consistently requires ongoing effort and refinement. Operating in an exclusive space means relying on intentional visits from patrons who value diverse artworks, including pieces from global and underrepresented communities in Chicago.

In terms of management, overseeing the gallery has been manageable thus far. I benefit from the support of dedicated interns and volunteers who contribute consistently to daily operations. Their expertise and commitment have been invaluable in navigating the day-to-day responsibilities and ensuring smooth gallery functioning.

How have the public and critics responded to your exhibitions so far?

The response to our exhibitions has been overwhelmingly positive. Visitors appreciate the gallery’s minimalist yet inviting design, with attention to detail such as providing high-quality Italian espresso. My personal approach as a sincere and hospitable hostess has also contributed to building a strong rapport and receiving continuous positive feedback. Moving forward, I aim to engage more critics to evaluate our exhibitions regularly and further enhance our reputation within the art community.

Is there an event or exhibition in your gallery that you consider particularly memorable?

Certainly!

One event that stands out in memory is Delia Rose West’s exhibition “SeeingTouch.” It was our inaugural show, and I remember feeling a mix of nerves and excitement about how it would be received. The turnout exceeded expectations with over 200 attendees at the opening, and we sold 40% of the artworks. The energy, appreciation from the audience, and the overall vibe made it an unforgettable and immensely rewarding experience for both Delia and myself.

And after that, there was no turning back. The success of Delia Rose West’s “SeeingTouch” exhibition marked a pivotal moment for us, solidifying our commitment to continue pushing boundaries and showcasing exceptional artistic talent.

Given the current state of the art market, do you think it could be beneficial to collaborate with other galleries and museums globally?

In today’s art market landscape, collaborating with galleries and museums globally is not just beneficial but essential. Such collaborations not only enhance prestige but also elevate the institution’s profile, attracting serious art collectors and investors. Scott Lynn, CEO of Masterworks, highlights how contemporary art has consistently outperformed the S&P over the past 26 years, emphasizing the financial benefits of investing in art. Building international connections enhances credibility for galleries and dealers, establishing trust in identifying valuable artworks and artists. These partnerships are pivotal in navigating the competitive and dynamic art market effectively.

Certainly, establishing understanding and trust in the art world takes time and strategic collaboration with more established entities is crucial. It’s through these partnerships that galleries can gain insights, build credibility, and expand their reach in the global art community.

How would you describe the contemporary art market in the United States?

The contemporary art market in the United States is experiencing a significant evolution, particularly in its recognition and support of minority and multicultural artists. There’s a notable shift towards valuing and providing opportunities to artists who were historically underrepresented. This inclusivity is not only exciting but also a point of pride for me as I actively contribute to increasing visibility for minority artists.

Public awareness and attention towards the Black community, in particular, have played a crucial role in this cultural shift. We’re witnessing artworks from minority artists being showcased in prestigious institutions and sought after by private collectors who are keen to support and contribute to their success. Themes explored in these artworks often critique social issues, such as Amanda Williams’ “Color(ed) Theory,” which boldly addresses the experience of Black Community in Chicago. Such socially critical works resonate deeply and are increasingly appreciated within the contemporary art scene.

What are your long-term goals for the gallery?

With a clear vision of entrepreneurship and compassion, I confidently curate diverse exhibitions ranging from high-value artworks to pieces by emerging artists seeking recognition. My strong passion for supporting social projects involving immigrants drives me to secure funding that amplifies their impact through art. Embracing diversity and inclusion, I am certain the gallery will flourish, providing a platform where established and emerging artists alike can thrive, and where impactful social initiatives receive the support and visibility they deserve. My ultimate aim is for the gallery to achieve international recognition and trust.

Celebrating our first successful year at the gallery, I am energized for the future. Looking forward, I envision a dynamic year ahead filled with exhibitions that highlight artists from around the world, including exceptionally talented Italian artists. This journey will further enrich our gallery’s offerings, foster cultural exchange, and strengthen our global connections.

In pursuit of becoming a respected and influential figure in the fine art world, I am determined to establish the gallery as a premier destination where collectors confidently acquire art of exceptional quality and significance

What advice would you give to someone who wants to open their own art gallery?

My advice would be to embrace the motto “Just Do It.” While it may sound cliché, if you feel empowered and have a strong intuition about opening an art gallery, take the leap. Start small by showcasing the work of an artist you know personally, whether in a basement or a more formal gallery space. Take full responsibility for every aspect of the exhibition’s production. If this initial venture proves successful and fulfilling, continue to build on it. In essence, follow your instincts and dive in

Do you organize events or programs to engage the local audience and promote contemporary art?

Yes, I organize events and programs aimed at engaging the local audience and promoting contemporary art. I’ve partnered with WTM (Whats The Move?) to foster a culture of connection. Together, we’ve curated panels, artist talks, and workshops that coincide with our current exhibitions and featured artists. Our gallery participates in the “Second Friday Art Walk,” offering an open house experience in Pilsen’s vibrant Art District, inviting the public to explore diverse studios.

During these events, we blend poetry readings with networking opportunities, aiming to foster a dynamic community around contemporary art. Supporting artists and nurturing creativity is central to our mission.

How does your gallery support emerging or lesser-known artists?

The gallery collaborates closely with not-for-profit organizations dedicated to championing equal opportunities for all. We actively seek local government grants to transform our gallery space into a nurturing and supportive environment for emerging and underrepresented artists
Additionally, we offer internship opportunities to art school students, allowing them to curate and showcase pop-up exhibitions during periods when the gallery isn’t hosting established artists. I firmly believe in mentorship and nurturing young talent. It’s vital for established artists to engage with emerging ones, fostering a mutual exchange that enriches both parties and enhances empathy across generations. This approach ensures our gallery remains connected to contemporary trends and supports the vibrant growth of artistic expression

Can you give us a preview of upcoming exhibitions or projects at your gallery?

In the upcoming season, our gallery has an exciting lineup of exhibitions. Renowned Estonian contemporary painter Raoul Kurvitz will showcase his work in the fall. From July to September, we will feature the extraordinary large-scale works of Steve Banaszek, influenced by street art and graffiti. October will highlight the drawings by Camilo Carreno, originally from Colombia. Looking forward, we have a thrilling large-scale photography project in development for spring. Additionally, I’m enthusiastic about our international collaboration to showcase works from Italy.

What is your biggest dream for your gallery?

I absolutely adore this question because dreaming big is my forte. I firmly believe in the power of visualization and how it can manifest into reality. While some may say dreaming isn’t a strategy, I find it to be a guiding force that smooths the path ahead.

My greatest dream for the gallery is to achieve global recognition, attracting the most esteemed contemporary artists to exhibit their work. I envision our space in Chicago not only as a cultural hub but also as a supportive community for emerging artists, providing them with invaluable opportunities to learn and grow alongside seasoned professionals. In addition to the gallery, I dream of establishing a foundation that works in close collaboration, fostering creativity and expanding artistic horizons.

Furthermore, I aspire to represent artists on a global scale, securing exhibition spaces worldwide for their work. Ultimately, I aim for our gallery to be revered both locally and internationally, known for its credibility and contribution to the arts community globally. This dream drives my passion and fuels my commitment to enriching the cultural landscape through art.

Thank you very much dear Liina.
